Progressive Groups March Against Corruption on Bonifacio Day
Hundreds of activists filled the streets of Central Visayas on Sunday, November 30, 2025, as progressive organizations intensified their campaign against government corruption. The demonstration, organized by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Central Visayas, strategically coincided with the 162nd birth anniversary of Philippine revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio.
Honoring a Revolutionary Legacy
The timing of the protest carried deep symbolic meaning. Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan movement, is celebrated nationwide for sparking the revolution against Spanish colonial rule. Organizers drew parallels between Bonifacio's historic struggle and their contemporary fight for social justice.
Jaime Paglinawan, chairperson of Bayan Central Visayas, reported that approximately 800 members and supporters participated in the march-rally. The coalition used this significant gathering to amplify long-standing social and economic demands that affect multiple sectors across the region.
Broad Social Demands Take Center Stage
While anti-corruption remained a central theme, protesters highlighted several critical issues impacting Filipino citizens. The demonstrators called for immediate government action on multiple fronts, including:
- Substantial wage increases for workers across industries
- Enhanced subsidies and support programs for agricultural workers
- Stronger legal protections for labor rights
- Comprehensive anti-corruption measures in government
Paglinawan emphasized that these demands represent interconnected challenges facing Philippine society. The rally aimed to pressure government officials to address what organizers describe as systemic problems requiring urgent attention and concrete solutions.
As the march concluded, participants vowed to continue their advocacy through peaceful demonstrations and public education campaigns. The November 30th event demonstrated the ongoing vitality of progressive movements in Central Visayas and their commitment to addressing both historical injustices and contemporary challenges facing the nation.
