CIDG Probes Possible Negligence in Ateneo Drownings
CIDG Probes Negligence in Ateneo Drownings

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) is not ruling out negligence in the drowning deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles basketball team.

Investigation Details

In a press conference on Monday, June 15, 2026, CIDG Director Major General Robert Morico II stated that the deaths are being investigated as possible homicide or hazing. He highlighted concerns over due diligence, noting that past incidents had occurred and questioned why basketball players were subjected to high-wave conditions without proper swimming skills.

Morico also questioned the decision to move training to a secluded area 300 meters away from the resort, where a lifeguard was stationed, potentially endangering the participants. Local authorities and resort personnel had allegedly warned the coaching staff about dangerous waters.

Focus on Coaching Staff

Investigators are examining allegations that the victims, both newcomers, may have been subjected to activities covered by the Anti-Hazing Act. Initial findings point to head coach Tab Baldwin as a central figure. Morico stated, "All directions point to the head coach."

The CIDG issued subpoenas to five key officials, but only athletics director Em Fernandez appeared. A new subpoena will include representatives from a telecommunication firm for possible liabilities in planning and funding team activities.

Boot Camp Allegations

Former and current players are being interviewed regarding claims that the activity was more like a boot camp than a team-building exercise. Social media posts describe the head coach as "not your friend" and the training as a boot camp.

At least three former players are expected to be invited, and current team members will appear on Friday after a postponement request due to trauma.

Estranged Wife's Statements

Morico confirmed that statements from Baldwin's estranged wife, Efi Kalogirou, will be part of the inquiry. She publicly claimed she had warned Ateneo officials about Baldwin and urged accountability, stating the incident was "predictable and preventable."

Resignations and Legal Actions

Ateneo president Fr. Roberto Yap confirmed Baldwin's resignation, along with team manager Epok Quimpo. The CIDG has requested an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order from the Department of Justice against coaches who ignored subpoenas.
