Authorities in the Zamboanga Peninsula have dealt a massive blow to smuggling syndicates, seizing illegal cigarettes valued at over P158.2 million in a month-long crackdown. The intensified operations, which led to the arrest of 25 individuals, underscore a renewed commitment to securing the region's economic borders.

Month-Long Operations Yield Major Haul

According to Police Brigadier General Edwin Quilates, director of the Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO-9), the confiscations and arrests were the result of 11 coordinated operations conducted across the region from November 1 to 30, 2025. The official announcement was made on Tuesday, December 2.

General Quilates' jurisdiction covers the provinces of Zamboanga del Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur, as well as the cities of Zamboanga and Isabela in Basilan. The widespread operations indicate a strategic, region-wide effort to dismantle illicit trade networks.

A Testament to Dedication and Collaboration

In a statement, General Quilates hailed the successful operations as clear proof of his personnel's dedication. "This successful operation is a testament to the dedication of our personnel to protect our economic borders and uphold the rule of law," he stated.

He emphasized that the accomplishment highlights PRO-9's firm commitment to law enforcement, border security, and support for the national government's anti-smuggling campaign. Quilates also pointed to the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in achieving such results.

Sustained Efforts Against Illicit Trade

Looking ahead, the police official vowed to maintain pressure on smuggling groups. "We will continue to collaborate closely with the Bureau of Customs and other government agencies to intensify our intelligence-driven patrols and dismantle smuggling syndicates operating in the Zamboanga Peninsula," Quilates added.

He further affirmed that PRO-9 remains steadfast in its commitment to secure the Zamboanga Peninsula from all forms of illicit activities. The commendation for the successful operation comes with a clear emphasis on the need for sustained anti-smuggling efforts to protect local economy and state revenues.
