Authorities in Zamboanga City have scored a major victory against smuggling, intercepting a massive shipment of contraband cigarettes valued at approximately P21 million and arresting one individual in a targeted operation.
Intelligence Operation Leads to Major Bust
The successful raid was conducted on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the port of Zamboanga City. According to Police Brigadier General Edwin Quilates, director of the Police Regional Office–Zamboanga Peninsula, the operation was intelligence-driven, showcasing effective coordination among law enforcement units.
Operatives intercepted a Wing Van vehicle during the mission. A thorough inspection revealed the van was not carrying ordinary cargo. Concealed inside, alongside sacks of charcoal, were around 300 master cases of assorted cigarettes, all believed to be smuggled into the country.
Suspect in Custody for Investigation
Lawmen arrested a 42-year-old resident from Ruste Drive, San Jose Cawa-Cawa village, Zamboanga City, in connection with the illicit shipment. The individual is currently under police custody for further investigation to uncover the broader network behind the smuggling attempt.
General Quilates praised the operating teams for their diligent work, which effectively prevented the entry of these illicit goods into the local market. The initial assessment placed the estimated market value of the seized cigarettes at a staggering P21 million.

General Quilates emphasized that this operation highlights the unwavering commitment of the Philippine National Police in combating smuggling and organized crime. He noted the critical role of close partnership with the Bureau of Customs and other law enforcement agencies in achieving such results.
"This operation underscores our continuing campaign against smuggling and other illegal activities that undermine lawful trade and national security," Quilates stated. He added that authorities remain steadfast in enforcing the law and protecting the economic integrity of the region's borders.
The bust serves as a strong warning to smuggling syndicates operating in the Zamboanga Peninsula. It demonstrates the enhanced capability of police and customs officials to act on precise intelligence, safeguarding local industries and government revenue from the harms of contraband trade.
