Military Neutralizes Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Leader and Nine Followers in Lanao del Sur Clash
In a significant blow to terrorist activities in Mindanao, government forces eliminated a key leader of the Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group (DI-MG) and nine of his followers during a law enforcement operation early Friday, April 17, 2026. Lieutenant General Donald Gumiran, commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), identified the slain DI-MG leader as Amerol Mangoranca, also known by the alias Usman. The firefight, which lasted approximately ten minutes, erupted around 1:30 a.m. as troops from the Joint Task Force-Zampelan, in coordination with Philippine National Police units, moved to serve multiple arrest warrants against DI-MG members.
These individuals faced serious charges including murder, frustrated homicide, kidnapping, and illegal detention. "During the lawful implementation of these warrants, government troops encountered the armed group, resulting in an exchange of fire that led to the neutralization of 10 terrorist personalities, including Mangoranca," Gumiran stated in an official release. He confirmed that no casualties were sustained by government forces during the engagement.
Seven of the nine slain followers were identified through their aliases: Molish, Orak, Pakmin, Muslim, Turab, Pulindang, and Nahara. Authorities linked Mangoranca's group to the deadly ambush on January 23, 2026, in Munai, Lanao del Sur, which claimed the lives of four soldiers, as well as other violent incidents that have threatened local communities.
Recovered Materials and Humanitarian Aspect
Following the clash, troops secured a cache of firearms and explosive materials, underscoring the group's capacity for violence. The recovered items included:
- Two M16 rifles
- One M4 rifle
- One Caliber .30 M1 Garand
- One caliber .38 revolver
- One grenade
- Improvised explosive device (IED) components
In a humanitarian note, Gumiran reported that a wounded infant was rescued from the clash site and promptly transported to a medical facility for urgent treatment. This highlights the complex and often tragic collateral impacts of such operations in conflict zones.
