Naval Forces Intercept Smuggling Operation
Personnel from the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) successfully intercepted a smuggling attempt in the waters between Basilan province and Zamboanga City, resulting in the arrest of two individuals and the confiscation of contraband valued at approximately P2.8 million.
Maritime Interdiction Details
The operation took place on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, when naval forces on routine patrol spotted a suspicious motorized banca approximately 4.2 nautical miles southwest of Kawa-Kawa, Zamboanga City. According to Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo Reyes Jr., WMNC commander, the vessel attempted to evade interception but was promptly stopped by the Navy patrol craft.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered 50 master cases of undocumented foreign-brand cigarettes aboard the vessel. The apprehended individuals, both residents of Zamboanga City, were taken into custody along with their non-functional motorboat.
Disposition of Confiscated Items
The arrested suspects and seized contraband were transported to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City for safekeeping. On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the confiscated items and vessel were formally turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC)–Port of Zamboanga for proper disposition.
This successful operation demonstrates the continued vigilance of Philippine naval forces in combating smuggling activities in southern Philippine waters. The WMNC remains committed to maintaining maritime security and enforcing laws against illegal trade operations in the region.
