Philippine and US Air Forces Deploy Advanced Aircraft for Cope Thunder 26-1 Drills

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) announced on Wednesday that participants in the Cope Thunder 26-1 exercises will significantly boost their combat readiness through highly realistic air combat training scenarios. This joint initiative with the US Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) aims to elevate tactical proficiency and operational effectiveness.

Top-of-the-Line Aircraft Deployment

Air Force spokesperson Colonel Ma. Christina Basco confirmed in a statement to reporters that both forces are deploying their most advanced aircraft to ensure the drills are as credible and impactful as possible. For Cope Thunder 26-1, the PAF has mobilized its Mach 1.5-capable FA-50PH fighter jets, while PACAF has contributed its premier stealth fighter, the F-22 "Raptor."

Specific numbers of aircraft involved have not been disclosed due to security considerations, but the focus remains on maximizing training value through these high-performance platforms.

Enhancing Tactical Skills and Advanced Operations

Colonel Basco elaborated that the FA-50PHs and F-22 Raptors will concentrate on refining tactical-level skills and advanced fighter operations during the exercises. The primary objective is to improve overall combat readiness by simulating realistic air combat scenarios.

The drills are scheduled to run from April 7 to 16, 2026, and will be conducted within designated intensive military training areas to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Support from Attack and ISR Platforms

To complement the fighter jets, the PAF will also deploy a variety of attack and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms. These assets are crucial for supporting a broad spectrum of missions, including:

  • Air defense and close air support operations
  • Transport and logistical missions
  • Surveillance and reconnaissance activities
  • Search and rescue operations

This multi-platform approach ensures a comprehensive training environment that mirrors real-world combat situations.

Post-Exercise Evaluation and Improvement

At the conclusion of Cope Thunder 26-1, a "hot wash" session will be conducted to thoroughly review operational performance. This debriefing process is designed to capture key learnings, identify strengths, and pinpoint areas for further improvement.

Such evaluations are essential for continuous enhancement of joint operational capabilities between the Philippine and US air forces.
