Akbar, Basilan Inaugurates New Public Market to Boost Local Economy

The municipal government of Akbar in Basilan province has officially inaugurated a new public market, a significant development aimed at revitalizing local trade and strengthening the municipality's economic foundation. This landmark project represents a major step forward for the community, promising to transform daily commerce and improve living standards for residents.

Modern Facility Funded by Regional Government

The construction of the single-storey structure, which features an integrated mezzanine, was fully funded by the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MILG-Barmm). This investment underscores the regional government's commitment to supporting local infrastructure and economic growth in the area.

Akbar Mayor Alih Sali, prominently seen in a baseball cap during the event, led the inauguration ceremony on Friday, January 23. The new facility is designed as a contemporary business hub, offering improved amenities for both vendors and residents, marking a departure from the previous inadequate market conditions.

Mayor Sali's Vision for Community Prosperity

In his address, Mayor Sali emphasized the transformative impact of the new market. "The new public market is a gift to the people of Akbar. For too long, our hardworking vendors have struggled with inadequate spaces, and our families have had to navigate crowded, unorganized areas to buy their daily needs," he stated.

He further elaborated on the broader economic benefits, adding, "With this facility, we are building a brighter future—one where local businesses can grow, where our community can shop with ease, and where Akbar can become a thriving center of trade in Basilan." Sali expressed deep gratitude to the MILG-Barmm for its crucial partnership in bringing this project to fruition and urged residents to actively support local vendors to maximize the market's potential.

Enhanced Operations and Safety Features

The new public market is expected to streamline market operations significantly, providing a safer and more organized space for trade. This improvement directly supports local livelihoods by creating a conducive environment for business activities and enhances access to essential goods for the community. Key benefits include:

  • Improved vendor spaces to accommodate more sellers efficiently.
  • Enhanced safety measures to protect both vendors and shoppers.
  • Better organization to reduce congestion and improve the shopping experience.
  • Increased economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs and small businesses.
