Barangay Carreta Takes Action for Market Restoration
The Barangay Council of Carreta in Cebu has taken a significant step to address the growing concerns of local residents by passing a resolution that calls for the re-establishment of the old wet market that once served the community.
The resolution, officially approved on October 21, 2025, directly appeals to the Cebu City Government to restore the public market that was previously located at the strategic junction of M.J. Cuenco Avenue and Imus Road.
Years of Inconvenience for Three Barangays
According to barangay officials, residents from three adjacent communities - Carreta, Tejero, and Lorega San Miguel - have been experiencing continuous hardship since the market's demolition. The absence of an accessible wet market has forced many to travel longer distances or depend on smaller retail stores where prices are significantly higher.
The former wet market, which was owned and operated by the Cebu City Government, was demolished due to safety concerns that emerged following the construction of Imus Road. The market had been situated at the center of the road, between M.J. Cuenco Avenue and Imus Road, making it conveniently accessible to thousands of residents.
Barangay officials emphasized that residents have been "long suffering from high prices of prime commodities due to the lack of a nearby wet market." This situation has created financial strain for many families who rely on affordable basic goods for their daily needs.
Legal Basis and Community Commitment
The resolution cites Section 17 of the Local Government Code, which explicitly grants local government units the authority to "own and operate satellite or public markets." This legal provision strengthens the barangay's position in requesting the market's restoration.
Beyond merely requesting reconstruction, Barangay Carreta has committed to actively supporting efforts to make the new market functional. The barangay pledged to "support initiatives that will make the re-established wet market operational and accessible" to residents of all three affected barangays.
The measure was sponsored by Councilor Antonio Conahap and seconded by Councilor Charlton Canoy, demonstrating unified support from local officials.
Re-establishing the market would provide substantial economic relief to thousands of residents in the area by offering affordable goods and creating a more convenient shopping environment. The barangay council's action represents a proactive approach to addressing community needs and improving quality of life for local residents.
