Cebu Governor Strengthens Price Monitoring with 40 Municipalities

Cebu Governor Reinforces Commitment to Price Stability Amid Consumer Protection Efforts

Governor Pamela Baricuatro has emphatically reinforced the Cebu Provincial Government's unwavering commitment to keeping prices of essential goods in check, as at least 40 municipalities across the province now actively monitor basic commodities through a coordinated system. This initiative underscores a proactive approach to safeguarding consumers and ensuring market transparency in the region.

Expanding Price Monitoring Across Municipalities

In a recent statement, Governor Baricuatro declared, "I will not hesitate to take action to protect our consumers. That's why we created the provincial price monitoring system, and thanks to God, the other municipalities, now 40, have very active price monitoring." This system requires municipal councils to report weekly prices of essential commodities, providing authorities with critical data to monitor market trends and take swift action if unreasonable price increases are detected.

Revival of Local Price Coordinating Councils

The initiative aligns with broader efforts by local governments to reactivate Local Price Coordinating Councils (LPCCs), which are mandated under the Price Act to prevent excessive price hikes and ensure access to affordable goods. Following a meeting at the Cebu Provincial Capitol, at least 25 local government units (LGUs) have committed to reviving their LPCCs. This includes cities such as Bogo, Danao, and Mandaue, along with numerous municipalities throughout the province.

Ensuring Supply Stability and Consumer Confidence

The Provincial Government emphasizes that this coordinated approach is vital for maintaining price stability, particularly in the face of global events that could disrupt supply chains and inflate costs. Authorities continue to assure residents that supplies of basic goods remain stable, with no need for panic buying. Notably, Cebu maintains a sufficient buffer stock to last at least three months, bolstering consumer confidence and market resilience.

These strengthened price monitoring measures highlight Cebu's proactive stance in addressing economic challenges, demonstrating a robust framework for consumer protection and transparent market operations. The ongoing efforts reflect a collaborative strategy between provincial and municipal levels to foster a fair and stable economic environment for all residents.
