Lapu-Lapu City Adjusts Historic Festival Amid Global Energy Pressures

The historic Battle of Mactan will continue to be commemorated this April, but the annual celebration will undergo significant modifications. Officials in Lapu-Lapu City have revealed that several of the festival's most prominent events are being postponed as a cost-saving measure during an ongoing global energy crisis.

Mayor Announces Strategic Cutbacks

Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan has officially confirmed the cancellation of the Sadsad sa Kadaugan 2026 Street Dancing and the Grand Ritual Showdown competition. This decisive action follows escalating tensions in the Middle East, which are driving fuel prices upward and adversely affecting the local economy.

Prioritizing Essential Public Services

The decision to scale back the festival emerged from meticulous consultations with the City Tourism Office and various event planners. Mayor Chan emphasized that the local government must exercise fiscal prudence, redirecting resources toward essential services for residents.

“In light of the ongoing energy crisis resulting from the conflict in the Middle East, the City Government of Lapu-Lapu announces the scaling back of activities for the 505th Kadaugan sa Mactan celebration this April,” stated Chan.

A Legacy Celebrating Filipino Bravery

The Kadaugan sa Mactan is an annual festival that honors the legendary battle on April 27, 1521. It commemorates the triumph of Datu Lapulapu and his warriors over the Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan. For countless Filipinos, this victory stands as a profound symbol of national courage and resistance.

Traditionally, the week-long event attracts thousands of visitors to the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan. In previous years, the City provided substantial financial grants to schools and villages to support elaborate costumes, props, and rehearsals for the street dancing. By postponing these costly competitions, the City can reallocate those funds to assist residents grappling with rising living expenses.

Core Festival Activities to Proceed

Despite these adjustments, the essence of the festival remains intact. Residents and tourists can still anticipate several key events:

  • The Reenactment: The iconic live-action battle at the beach will proceed as scheduled.
  • Food Festival: Local small businesses will continue to showcase their culinary specialties at the Kadaugan Food Festival.
  • Nightly Events: A variety of evening activities will be maintained throughout the festival week.

While the absence of dance competitions may result in quieter streets, the City reaffirms its commitment to honoring its rich history while safeguarding the economic welfare of its citizens in these challenging times.
