Mandaue City Rehabilitates Skywalk to Enhance Student and Pedestrian Safety

In a significant move to bolster safety for students and pedestrians, Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo “Jonkie” Ouano conducted an official visit to the newly rehabilitated skywalk in Barangay Subangdaku on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The initiative aims to address long-standing concerns over hazardous street crossings in the area.

Typhoon Odette Damage and Restoration Efforts

During the turnover ceremony, Mayor Ouano informed reporters that the skywalk was among the infrastructures severely impacted by Typhoon Odette, which had completely torn off its roofing. The storm's devastation necessitated urgent repairs to restore functionality and ensure public safety.

Thanks to the generous support of Simon Agri Business Corporation and Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines Inc., the skywalk has undergone comprehensive rehabilitation. Key improvements include the installation of new roofing, application of fresh paint, and enhanced lighting systems. Notably, these upgrades were implemented at no cost to the City Government, showcasing a successful public-private partnership.

Impact on Student Safety and Community Benefits

Iris Mae Petancio, principal of Subangdaku Elementary School, highlighted the transformative effect of the rehabilitated skywalk. She explained that students who previously had to navigate the busy street now utilize the skywalk, significantly reducing risks and providing shelter from inclement weather. This change has made daily commutes much safer and more convenient for young learners.

Adopt-a-Skywalk Program and Ongoing Progress

This rehabilitation effort is part of the broader “Adopt-a-Skywalk” program, initiated by the City Government through the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The program seeks assistance from the business sector to maintain and improve skywalks across the city. Currently, nine skywalks are supported by various companies under this initiative.

Mayor Ouano reported that progress on the skywalks has reached approximately 90 percent, indicating substantial advancements in the city's infrastructure renewal. Under the program, private partners will be responsible for maintenance, while barangay and local government officials will oversee security and peace and order, ensuring sustained safety and functionality.

The rehabilitation of the Subangdaku skywalk exemplifies Mandaue City's commitment to enhancing public infrastructure through collaborative efforts, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all residents.
