Lapu-Lapu Mayor Urges Public to Report Unauthorized Fare Hikes Amid Rising Fuel Costs
Mayor Calls for Reporting Unauthorized Fare Hikes in Lapu-Lapu

In response to the continuous surge in fuel prices, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King-Chan has issued a public call for citizens to report any van-for-hire (V-hire) or bus operators that have increased their fares without official authorization from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Reports of Unauthorized Fare Increases

The mayor's statement came after the city government received multiple reports indicating that several public utility vehicles (PUVs) have already implemented fare hikes, despite the absence of any formal directive or approval from the LTFRB. This development has raised concerns among commuters and authorities alike, prompting immediate action to address the issue.

Public Cooperation Encouraged

Mayor Chan strongly encouraged passengers to actively participate in monitoring compliance by submitting the plate numbers of vehicles involved in these unauthorized fare increases. This information is crucial for enabling authorities to take swift and appropriate action against violators, ensuring that transport regulations are upheld and commuters are protected from unjust practices.

Acknowledgment of Operators' Challenges

While emphasizing the need for strict adherence to legal procedures, Mayor Chan acknowledged that transport operators are indeed facing significant challenges due to the escalating costs of fuel. She recognized that fare adjustments may be necessary to help operators sustain their businesses amidst economic pressures. However, she stressed that any such changes must follow the correct and lawful process to maintain order and fairness in the public transport sector.

LTFRB's Exclusive Authority

Mayor Chan clarified that the LTFRB holds the sole authority to approve and implement any fare increases for public transportation. Operators are required to wait for the official release of new tariff rates before making any adjustments to their fares. This regulatory framework is designed to prevent arbitrary hikes that could burden commuters and disrupt the stability of the transport system.

The mayor's proactive stance aims to balance the needs of both operators and passengers, ensuring that while economic realities are addressed, regulatory compliance is not compromised. The city government continues to monitor the situation closely, working in coordination with the LTFRB to safeguard public interest and maintain transparency in transport operations.
