Moalboal Implements Strict Wet Market Ordinance for Fish and Meat Vendors
Starting on Monday, March 2, 2026, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Moalboal has rigorously enforced its Wet Market Ordinance, mandating that all fish and meat vendors must display and sell their products exclusively within the designated wet market area. This move aims to enhance public health and market organization in the municipality.
Official Announcement and Ordinance Details
In a statement posted on their official Facebook page on Friday, February 27, 2026, the Moalboal Public Information Office emphasized that the LGU is strengthening the implementation of Ordinance 148-2020. Under this ordinance, vendors are required to conduct their sales only inside the specified wet market zone to ensure order, cleanliness, and food safety for consumers.
The LGU noted that despite available spaces within the facility, some vendors have continued to sell outside the wet market, prompting stricter enforcement measures. To address this, the municipality has launched an intensified information campaign within the market to educate vendors and ensure compliance with the new rules.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Vendors who violate the ordinance will face significant penalties, structured as follows:
- First offense: A fine of P500.
- Second offense: A fine of P1,500.
- Third offense: A fine of P2,500, imprisonment for up to 15 days, or both, depending on the court's decision.
These penalties are designed to deter violations and uphold the ordinance's objectives of maintaining a hygienic and orderly market environment.
Impact on Local Community
The enforcement of this ordinance is expected to benefit the local community by improving food safety standards and reducing clutter in public areas. By centralizing fish and meat sales, the LGU aims to create a more controlled and sanitary marketplace, which could boost consumer confidence and support local economic activities.
As the information campaign rolls out, officials are optimistic that vendors will adhere to the regulations, fostering a cooperative effort towards a cleaner and safer Moalboal.
