3 Arrested in San Remigio Illegal Cockfighting Operation

Authorities in San Remigio, Cebu, have apprehended three individuals, two of whom are senior citizens, during a targeted police operation against illegal cockfighting this week.

Police Operation Nets Three Suspects

Acting on a tip from a concerned citizen, personnel from the San Remigio Police Station conducted an operation in Purok Lumboy, Barangay Tacup on the afternoon of Monday, January 12, 2026. The operation aimed to dismantle an ongoing illegal cockfighting, or 'tigbakay', session in the coastal Luyong Baybay area.

Upon arrival, operatives discovered a large gathering of gamblers actively engaged in the illicit activity. The sight of the police caused a scramble, with many participants fleeing the scene. However, three men were unable to escape and were subsequently arrested.

Identities of the Arrested and Charges Filed

The San Remigio Police identified the arrested individuals as Manolito Andrin Burlaos, 53; Jose Dolpe Buena Frasco, 67; and Recardo Tero Corbo, 64. All three are residents of the area. They have been formally charged with violations of Presidential Decree 449, also known as the Illegal Gambling Law.

Meanwhile, eight other identified gamblers were also charged but remain at large. They were named as Bano Piañar, Debon Corbo Baran, Alejandro Piañar, Aling Piañar, Rey Tero (alias Niyas), Chris Badilis, and Harry Badilis.

Evidence Recovered and Bail Posted

Police investigators, led by Police Staff Sergeant Ginido Gilbuenatwo gamecocks, two gaffs (blades used in cockfighting), and bet money totaling 350 Philippine Pesos.

Staff Sgt. Gilbuena noted that the group frequently converged at that specific location for illegal sabong sessions. Following their arrest, the three detained men secured their temporary release after each posted a bail bond amounting to 30,000 Philippine Pesos.

This operation underscores the continued efforts of local police units to combat illegal gambling activities within their jurisdictions, particularly those involving organized animal fighting.
