Malacañang Confirms Transfer of Four-Star Rank from Ex-PNP Chief Torre to Nartaez
In a significant development within the Philippine National Police (PNP), Malacañang has officially confirmed that former PNP chief General Nicolas Torre III has agreed to transfer his prestigious four-star rank to the acting PNP chief, Lieutenant General Jose Nartaez Jr.. This announcement comes amidst earlier confusion and clarifies the status of the police leadership transition.
Clarification on Torre's Position and Retirement
According to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro, she personally spoke with General Torre to address the matter. Castro explained that there was a misunderstanding regarding Torre's previous statement, where he indicated he would not opt for optional retirement. She emphasized that Torre has now accepted the transfer of his rank to Nartaez, aligning with the requirements of his new appointment.
Castro further detailed that Torre is aware that, due to his acceptance of President Ferdinand Marcos's appointment as General Manager of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), it is appropriate to pass on the four-star rank to Nartaez. This move ensures continuity and proper hierarchy within the PNP leadership structure.
Denial of Further Meetings on the Issue
In addition to confirming the rank transfer, Undersecretary Castro denied reports of any planned meetings regarding this issue. She refuted claims that Torre had requested a discussion involving the President and the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) to address the matter. Castro stated that no such meetings are scheduled, indicating that the transfer process is proceeding as finalized without further deliberation.
This development highlights the ongoing adjustments in the PNP's top brass, following Torre's move to a civilian role in the MMDA. The transfer of the four-star rank to Nartaez solidifies his position as the acting chief and underscores the importance of clear communication in governmental transitions.
