A tragic drive-by shooting on a major Zamboanga City highway has claimed the life of a driver transporting seafood, sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting a police manhunt.

Details of the Fatal Attack

The Zamboanga City Police Office reported that the incident occurred along the Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat (MCLL) highway in Barangay Cabaluay. The victim was identified as Muktasil Lalao, an adult resident of San Jose Gusu village in the same city.

According to the initial police investigation, the attack happened at approximately 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Lalao was behind the wheel of a fish carrier truck, accompanied by an unnamed companion. Their vehicle was en route to Cebu City, with a planned stop in Dapitan City, carrying a load of fresh squid and octopus.

Gunmen Flee the Scene

The investigation further disclosed that two men on a motorcycle overtook the truck along the MCLL highway. One of the assailants then opened fire on the driver in a brazen drive-by gun attack. After the shooting, the motorcycle-riding gunmen sped off toward the east coast direction, evading immediate capture.

Lalao sustained fatal gunshot wounds from the assault. The identity of his companion, who was unharmed or whose condition was not detailed, has been withheld by authorities.
