The Philippine Army's 1103rd Infantry "Kalis" Brigade took a leading role in honoring the country's national hero during the 129th Rizal Day Commemoration held in Jolo, Sulu. The solemn event, which took place on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, saw strong collaboration between the military, local government, and the community.
Military and Local Government Unite for Ceremony
The commemorative activities were hosted by the military, with Brigadier General Cabasan represented by Colonel Abdelhalim Sakilan, the deputy commander of the 1103rd Brigade. The event carried the powerful theme "Rizal: Sa Pagbangon ng mga Mamamayan, Aral at Diwa Mo ang Tunay na Gabay," focusing on Dr. Jose Rizal's enduring lessons for national unity and civic duty.
The program commenced with a formal wreath-laying ceremony, organized by the 1103rd Brigade in coordination with the 35th Infantry Battalion (35IB). An honor guard provided by the troops stood in respect as the Sulu police rendered a 21-gun salute. In a poignant moment, members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines raised the Philippine flag.
Governor, Mayor Highlight Rizal's Legacy
The ceremony was graced by key local officials, with Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan II serving as the guest of honor and speaker. He was joined by Jolo Mayor Edsir Tan and other municipal leaders. Mayor Tan delivered the welcome remarks, setting a tone of communal reflection.
A significant part of the program was an interfaith invocation, symbolizing the unity among Sulu's diverse communities. Governor Tan then delivered a message underscoring the profound significance of Rizal's life and writings in fostering patriotism and a spirit of service among Filipinos today.

A distinctive highlight that resonated deeply with attendees was the reading of Dr. Jose Rizal's poem in the Tausug language. Jolo Vice Mayor Khumaidy Tan delivered the closing remarks, after which representatives from all participating government departments and agencies offered flowers at the hero's monument.
