Four years later, the Philippine Senate is a different place. Disagreements are rampant, and vested interests dominate the agenda. The chamber is filled with political scientists and lawyers advancing conflicting views, leaving many to wonder: Who is really the Senate president now? Who holds the gavel?
Missing Faces from That Happy Evening
Notably absent from the 2022 gathering were Senators Lito Lapid, Chiz Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, and Bong Go. It remains unclear whether they were not invited or chose to snub the fellowship. Meanwhile, in the video circulating on Facebook, Senators Koko Pimentel, Raffy Tulfo, and Robin Padilla stayed in the background, not belting as loudly as others—perhaps unfamiliar with the song or off-key, though they still seemed to enjoy the moment.
Senator Tito Sotto, a good singer and songwriter himself—though not, in this writer's view, a great legislator—must have smiled ear to ear watching his colleagues enjoy themselves. In contrast, former Senator Ping Lacson appears perpetually serious; it is hard to recall ever seeing him smile.
Notable and Forgettable Senators
In recent years, some senators have stood out for the wrong reasons. Cynthia Villar was quoted as not believing in research, calling it a waste of money. Nancy Binay contributed little in terms of legislation. Ramon 'Bong' Revilla and others squandered opportunities to show love for country, prioritizing money instead.
Recent Turmoil in the Senate
More recently, Senator Rodante Marcoleta chaired the Blue Ribbon Committee with a no-nonsense approach, but Malacañang apparently was displeased. In a turn of events, Marcoleta was deposed, and the unsmiling Ping Lacson took over. Then Pia Cayetano was named by her brother after he secured 13 votes in the upper house. Soon, quarrels erupted after Senator Bato Dela Rosa dodged an ICC arrest warrant, running like Tom Hanks in the movie 'Forrest Gump.' Days later, Senator Jinggoy Estrada was arrested and had his mugshot taken for the third time. There were walkouts, and 12 senators installed the son of the 'plastic king,' Senator Sherwin Gatchalian. The drama in the Senate continues, and when it will end, nobody can say for sure. We can only speculate.
