Senator Robin Padilla has once again proudly defended his reference to his prison experience as the 'University of Prison,' following public reactions after he mentioned it during the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte in the Senate. In a statement shared on social media, Padilla expressed pride in his nearly three-year incarceration, claiming it taught him important life lessons and shaped his character. The senator described his experience as a 'university of life.'
Padilla's Statement on Social Media
'I am truly proud of my 3 years in the University of Prison. This place is the real university of life… It is easy to enter here. What is difficult is to get out and graduate with honors or with death,' Padilla said. He earlier sparked discussion during the impeachment proceedings when he said he graduated from 'UP.' He later clarified that he meant the 'University of Prison,' not the University of the Philippines.
Lessons from Prison
According to Padilla, his prison experience taught him discipline, humility, and valuable lessons that cannot be learned in a traditional classroom. He emphasized that his time behind bars was formative. Padilla was imprisoned in the 1990s for illegal possession of firearms. He was later acquitted and released after nearly three years.
Public Reactions Divided
Netizens have expressed mixed opinions about the senator's remarks. Some supported his perspective, while others criticized his use of the term 'University of Prison' to describe his incarceration. The controversy continues to generate debate online.
