Wanted Kalinga Politician Killed in Police Operation After Decades-Long Manhunt
In a significant law enforcement breakthrough, Philippine National Police (PNP) forces have neutralized an armed and dangerous politician from Kalinga who was wanted for multiple murder cases spanning decades. The operation, which culminated in a dramatic gunfight, marks the end of a long pursuit for a figure notorious for evading justice.
Decades of Criminal Activity and Political Influence
Corey Dickpus, a former barangay captain and vice mayor of Lubuagan town, had been on the run due to standing arrest warrants for multiple murder charges. His criminal record dates back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, including a notorious ambush in 2002 that resulted in the deaths of two Special Action Force (SAF) commandos. Despite these serious allegations, Dickpus maintained a reputation for being untouchable, leveraging his political positions to avoid capture.
He served multiple terms in local government and even ran as an independent candidate for vice mayor of Lubuagan in the 2025 midterm elections, though he lost. This political clout had previously thwarted several attempts to arrest him, highlighting the challenges faced by authorities in bringing him to justice.
Dawn Operation and Intense Gunfight
Acting on intelligence reports, local police forces, backed by SAF personnel, tracked Dickpus down in Barangay Poblacion, Lubuagan. The operation was launched at dawn on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Police were aware that Dickpus was fully armed, and this intelligence proved crucial when he engaged the arresting team in a gunfight that lasted approximately 30 minutes.
PNP acting chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated in a Wednesday announcement, "Our personnel on the ground were fully aware of the background of the subject of the arrest warrant, and this became instrumental in the planning and execution of the measures to arrest him." During the confrontation, Dickpus was wounded and later arrested.
Aftermath and Recovery of Weapons
Dickpus was transported to the Kalinga District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The operation also led to the seizure of a significant arsenal, including:
- An M16 rifle with an M203 grenade launcher
- An M14 rifle
- A caliber .45 pistol
- 19 rounds of 40mm ammunition
- Five magazines for the M14 rifle
- Five magazines for the M16 rifle
- Two magazines for the caliber .45 pistol
One policeman was wounded during the operation but is now in stable condition. Nartatez assured full medical and necessary support for the officer, emphasizing the risks taken by law enforcement.
Strong Message from Police Leadership
Lieutenant General Nartatez highlighted the operation as a testament to the PNP's dedication. He said, "This operation is proof of your PNP's dedication and commitment to enforcing the law, no matter how challenging and risky it is. This should also serve as a strong message to everybody never to challenge the power and authority of the police."
He further commended all personnel involved, adding, "I commend all the personnel who took part in the planning and execution of the operation to arrest this fugitive. You proved once again that no task is too hard if we work together to honor our commitment to serve and protect the Filipino people." This incident underscores ongoing efforts to combat impunity and uphold justice in the Philippines.
