Quezon City Representative Faces Backlash Over Inappropriate Comments
Quezon City Representative Bong Suntay has drawn sharp criticism after making lewd remarks about actress Anne Curtis during a House Committee on Justice hearing. The incident occurred while the committee was discussing the third impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, adding a controversial twist to the already tense proceedings.
Controversial Analogy Sparks Outrage
During the hearing, Suntay argued that allegations of sedition against Duterte were unfounded, comparing them to his personal "imagination" when seeing Anne Curtis in a mall. He insisted that such thoughts shouldn't lead to criminal liability since they remained in his mind. This analogy immediately prompted San Juan Representative Ysabel Maria Zamora, the committee's vice chairperson, to order the remarks removed from the official record.
Suntay refused to retract his statement, maintaining there was nothing sexual or immoral about his comments. However, Zamora firmly advised him that such language was inappropriate, especially at the beginning of National Women's Month. Committee chairperson Batangas Representative Gerville Luistro supported this position, stating that Suntay's remarks had crossed acceptable boundaries for lawmakers.
Defense and Broader Implications
Representative Suntay clarified that he merely wanted to demonstrate that having a "desire" doesn't constitute a criminal act, using his personal experience as an example. He expressed concern about censorship in hearings, warning that if committees can easily remove statements they dislike from records, it could undermine public trust in the legislative process.
Meanwhile, the committee continued its review of the third impeachment complaint filed by clergy and lawyers against Duterte. The first two complaints have already been dismissed, while a fourth complaint from lawyer Nathaniel Cabrera, endorsed by Manila Representative Bienvenido Abante Jr. and Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V, remains within the committee's jurisdiction.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Philippine politics, where discussions about impeachment and legislative decorum intersect with broader social issues. The backlash against Suntay's remarks underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism in congressional proceedings, particularly during sensitive national discussions.
