Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball League Revives Division A for 2026 Season

The 29th edition of the Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) is set to launch its 2026 season on May 3 at the Magis Eagles Arena, with a major highlight being the reintroduction of Division A. This significant update was officially announced by league officials during a media day held on April 11 at Bonifacio District, signaling a new chapter for the alumni competition.

Enhanced Competition and Team Participation

According to SHAABAA president Jop Gallardo, the decision to bring back Division A has already sparked enthusiasm among alumni teams. This move has not only encouraged former participants to rejoin the league but has also attracted new teams, thereby strengthening the overall competitive landscape. Gallardo emphasized that one of the primary objectives for this season was to reinstate Division A, and he expressed satisfaction with the positive response from the community.

"We are thrilled to see many teams signing up, which ensures that Division A will truly make a comeback in our league," Gallardo stated. He added that this revival aims to foster camaraderie and reinforce friendships among batchmates, aligning with SHAABAA's core mission of building community through sports.

League Structure and Team Movements

The SHAABAA operates on a dynamic system where older batches progress to higher divisions to accommodate new graduates. For the 2026 season, this structure will see notable shifts:

  • Batch 2001, serving as this year's host, is among the returning teams in Division A.
  • Cebu Landmasters-Batch 2003 moves up from Division B to Division A.
  • Nest Workspaces-Batch 2013 transitions from Division C to Division B.
  • Batch 2026 will debut in Division C, marking the entry of recent graduates.

Gallardo also mentioned that some jubilarian batches may collaborate with other teams to form complete lineups in Division A, ensuring robust participation. Currently, two teams have finalized their rosters, while others are in the process of completing theirs, adding an element of anticipation as the season approaches.

Leadership and Game Schedule

Overseeing the league's operations are chairman Jedd Ryan Go, along with several board members, commissioner Boyet Velez, and deputy commissioner Jerry Capacio. Their collective efforts are geared towards delivering a fun and competitive season for all involved.

The 2026 season will feature a total of 10 games, scheduled from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., providing ample opportunity for fans to enjoy the action. With the return of Division A, spectators can expect heightened excitement and more intense matchups, as highlighted by Batch 2001's belief that this change will make the games more engaging.

In summary, the revival of Division A in the SHAABAA 2026 season promises to enhance the league's appeal, drawing in both veteran and new teams for a spirited display of alumni basketball. Fans are encouraged to mark their calendars for May 3 and support their batches in this celebrated tradition.
