Davao City's 89th Araw ng Dabaw Boxing Tournament to Feature 40 Bouts

The Davao City Amateur Boxing Association (DCABA) is set to stage a 40-bout amateur boxing tournament on Saturday, March 14, at the Bolton Elementary School Gym. This event is a key part of the city's 89th Araw ng Dabaw sports festivities, designed to scout and nurture the next generation of local boxing talent.

Focus on Youth Development and Talent Scouting

During the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Annex of SM City Davao on Thursday, March 13, 2026, DCABA official Seth Delos Reyes emphasized the tournament's primary goal: to develop Davao boxers. He stated that the event is limited to Davao City to concentrate efforts on local athletes. Of the 40 scheduled bouts, 30 will involve young fighters who have previously competed in events like the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA), Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA), and Batang Pinoy.

Delos Reyes explained that this tournament serves as another stage in the selection process for boxers who will represent the city in upcoming competitions. It allows officials to monitor athletes closely and identify top performers for future tournaments.

Safety Measures and Participant Highlights

Organizers have underscored that safety is their top priority. DCABA strictly prohibits fighters younger than 13 from competing, with Delos Reyes noting that they are particularly vigilant about the children's safety. In addition to youth bouts, the event will include "team bouts" featuring trainees from several local business clubs who have undergone weeks of training in preparation for the matches.

Among the competitors is Abdulaziz Aldohaiz of Ateneo de Davao University, who shared that he found boxing more suitable than his previous sport. He enjoys the discipline it instills and uses it as a positive outlet for personal growth.

Event Details and Public Invitation

The first bout is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Delos Reyes has extended an invitation to the public to attend and support local fighters, highlighting the community's role in fostering sports development. This tournament not only celebrates Davao City's rich boxing heritage but also aims to build a strong foundation for future athletic success.
