Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot center of the San Antonio Spurs, has signed a maximum rookie extension worth $252 million over five years. The deal includes a player option for the fifth season, giving Wembanyama the flexibility to choose whether to remain with the Spurs or move to another team after the fourth year.
Contract Details and Negotiations
According to NBA insiders, Wembanyama agreed to a 25% max contract rather than a 30% supermax extension after a series of discussions. Had the supermax been finalized, the contract would have been worth $303 million over the same five-year period. The $252 million deal is the third-largest rookie extension in NBA history, trailing only Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons and Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Wembanyama's Impact on the Spurs
In the 2025-2026 season, Wembanyama led the Spurs to the postseason with the second-best record in the Western Conference. San Antonio advanced to the NBA Finals after defeating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the conference finals but ultimately lost to the New York Knicks.
