Balangauan and Nailga Deliver Dominant Wins at ICTSI Mactan Junior Golf Championship
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Tash Balangauan and Alexis Nailga emerged as the standout stars at the ICTSI Mactan Island Junior PGT Championship held in Lapu-Lapu City on Friday. Despite a minor mishap where Balangauan brushed off ants after an unfortunate landing in an insect-infested patch on the rough of No. 4, both players transformed what could have been routine closing rounds into emphatic victories, sending a strong warning to the field ahead of next week's Visayas-Mindanao Series leg at the more demanding Alta Vista course in Cebu City.
Nailga's Commanding Lead and Final Round Challenges
Alexis Nailga entered the final round with a seemingly unassailable 20-stroke cushion, built on impressive scores of 66 and 69 at the Mactan Island Golf Course. However, he faced early setbacks with a costly double bogey and a bogey for the second consecutive day. A shaky stretch in the middle of the round, compounded by a late double-bogey mishap, resulted in a closing 75. Despite these challenges, Nailga secured a 15-shot victory with a six-over 210 total in the first leg of the six-stage regional series organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. Notably, Nailga will skip the Alta Vista leg to focus on the Mindanao swing of the southern series, which kicks off at his home course in Del Monte from April 29 to May 1.
Balangauan's Relentless Focus and Emphatic Victory
In the girls' division, Tash Balangauan refused to treat the final round as a mere formality, despite holding a commanding 13-stroke overnight lead. Playing with relentless focus, she methodically stretched her advantage with a closing 71. Balangauan punctuated her round with three birdies over the final six holes, highlighted by a pitch-in eagle on the last hole, sealing the tournament with a 226 total for an emphatic 20-shot victory. Her performance underscored her superiority and set a high bar for future competitions.
Other Notable Performances and Age Group Battles
Roman Tiongko rebounded from wobbly opening rounds of 80 and 77 with a late surge, carding an even-par 68 to snatch second place at 225. Sebastian Sajuela shot a 75 to share third place at 233 with Ritchie Go, who turned in a 76. In the girls' division, Apple Gothiong placed second at 246 after a 78, while Lois Lane Go pooled a 249 after a 77 for third.
While the premier division showcased dominance, the younger age groups, disputed over 36 holes, delivered the tournament's most gripping moments. In the 7-10 boys' category, Ethan Lago had to dig deep in the closing stretch to hold off a determined Lucas Revilleza, while Akeisha Yocte outlasted Vanya Go and Zoey Mascariñas in a tightly contested girls' race last Thursday. The 11-14 division also featured intense battles, with Ralph Batican and Marqaela Dy emerging victorious after hard-fought campaigns.
Looking Ahead to Tougher Challenges
As Nailga and Balangauan head into the next leg brimming with confidence, they understand that tougher challenges await on the more exacting stage of the Alta Vista course. Their performances at the ICTSI Mactan Island Junior PGT Championship not only highlight their current prowess but also set the stage for an exciting continuation of the regional series, promising more thrilling golf action in the weeks to come.
