Beach Ping Pong Set for Debut at 89th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival

In an exciting announcement, beach ping pong will make its inaugural appearance at the 89th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival, scheduled for March 7 and 8, 2026. The revelation came from Friendee L. Nuñez, the sport's founder and tournament director, during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at The Annex of SM City Davao on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Adapting Table Tennis for Outdoor Play

Beach ping pong is a modified version of traditional table tennis, specifically designed for outdoor sand environments. To accommodate the unique conditions, organizers utilize specialized equipment:

  • A slightly smaller table measuring 4.5 by 9 feet.
  • A larger 50mm ball that offers better resistance to wind.
  • Rackets covered with sandpaper instead of rubber to withstand heat and other outdoor elements.

This innovative setup ensures the sport remains playable and enjoyable in beach settings, distinguishing it from its indoor counterpart.

Tournament Details and Future Prospects

While beach ping pong typically includes multiple divisions, this year's Araw ng Dabaw showcase will feature only the singles tournament. The sport has already garnered recognition from the Davao City Sports Office and is gaining momentum through organized regional groups across the nation. Nuñez expressed hopes to promote beach ping pong in resorts throughout the region, aiming to expand its reach and popularity.

In related news, the 89th Araw ng Dabaw Table Tennis Tournament will take place from March 20 to 22 at the Spin Davao Table Tennis Center along Jacinto Extension, offering a traditional indoor competition alongside the new beach variant.
