Japan's Kaiya Ota Dominates with Record-Breaking Sprint at ACC Championships
In a stunning display of speed and skill, Japan's Kaiya Ota carved out his legacy at the Tagaytay CT Velodrome during the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) Track Cycling Championships. Ota not only set a new elite men's sprint record in the qualifying round but also secured the gold medal with commanding ease, showcasing his prowess on the track.
Record-Shattering Performance
During Sunday's qualifiers, Ota clocked an impressive 9.348 seconds, breaking the previous Asian mark of 9.350 seconds that he himself had established at the Paris Olympics in August 2024. This achievement underscored his status as a top contender in the sport. In the final race, although he posted a time of 9.575 seconds, it was sufficient to outpace China's Li Zhiwei, who finished with 9.926 seconds, denying any chance of an upset.
Japanese Team Excellence
Ota's victory was part of a broader success story for Japan at the championships, which were hosted by PhilCycling and Tagaytay City, with support from the Philippine Sports Commission, MVP Sports Foundation, Sports Plus PH, Toyota, and Peak. In the elite men's Madison event, Eiya Hashimoto and Kazushige Kuboki delivered a masterful performance, earning gold with 104 points. Kazakhstan's Ilya Karabutov and Ramis Dinmukhametov took silver with 82 points, while Hong Kong's Tsu Wai Chu and Kai Kwong Tso claimed bronze with 65 points.
Similarly, in the women's Madison, Mizuki Ikeda and Maho Kakita secured gold for Japan with 53 points, outperforming China's Xianbing Gong and Menghan Zhou, who won silver with 40 points, and Hong Kong's Sze Wing Lee and Wing Yee, who earned bronze with 31 points.
