In a significant move for sports development in Mindanao, two-time Olympic boxing medalist Nesthy Petecio has expressed strong support for the Municipality of Sta. Cruz's ambitious plan to construct a dedicated athletes' village. The project, aimed at nurturing local and national talents, was discussed during Petecio's courtesy visit to Mayor Jose Nelson "Tata" Sala on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Champion's Endorsement for Grassroots Development
The Davao City-born champion, whose parents reside in Barangay Tuban, Sta. Cruz, met with Mayor Sala at the municipal hall. During their conversation, the mayor outlined his vision for a facility designed to support homegrown athletes, members of the national team, and student-athletes. Petecio, a revered figure in Philippine sports, praised the initiative for its comprehensive approach.
"The mayor's plan for athletes is great, benefiting not only national athletes but also student-athletes," Petecio stated in a Messenger interview with SunStar Davao on Tuesday, January 13. She later emphasized on social media the mayor's "strong support, not only to sports but to the whole of Sta. Cruz."
Financial Support and Long-Term Vision
The visit also highlighted the existing support the local government provides to its elite athletes. Petecio revealed that she and her younger brother, Norlan Alcayde Petecio, who is also a national boxing pool member, each receive a monthly allowance of P10,000 from the Sta. Cruz LGU. This financial backing underscores the town's commitment to its sporting representatives.
The proposed athletes' village is envisioned as a long-term investment, providing housing and training support. Local officials see it as a crucial step in strengthening both grassroots and elite sports development, creating a sustainable pipeline for talent from the province.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Nesthy Petecio, a bronze medalist at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games and one of the Philippines' most decorated boxers, continues to be a central figure and role model. Her endorsement of the Sta. Cruz project carries significant weight, inspiring young athletes from Mindanao and across the nation. The plan marks a promising chapter for sports infrastructure in Davao del Sur, potentially creating a hub for future champions.
