The City of Zamboanga has dispatched a 38-member delegation to compete in the 2026 National Weightlifting Championships, set to take place in Soccsksargen, officials confirmed on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
Event Details and Send-Off Ceremony
Dr. Cecil Atilano, the City Sports director, announced that the weightlifting competition will be held from Saturday, June 6, to Friday, June 12, in General Santos City. A send-off ceremony was held on Tuesday evening, June 2, at the Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) in Divisoria village, Zamboanga City. The event was led by Atilano, along with Mayor Khymer Olaso, who was represented by his brother Kaizer Olaso and his executive assistants.
Mayor's Message of Support
Mayor Olaso extended his best wishes to the athletes and reaffirmed the City Government's commitment to supporting youth and sports development initiatives. He highlighted that the local government provided an P8,000 cash allowance to each athlete, in addition to covering expenses for meals, uniforms, and travel.
Significance of the Championships
Councilor Elbert Atilano Sr., who serves as president of the Zamboanga City Weightlifting Training Center, explained that the competition in General Santos City serves as the final evaluation and selection process for the National Training Pool for the year. It will also determine which athletes will represent the Philippines in various international weightlifting competitions scheduled for 2026.
Atilano noted that Zamboanga City weightlifters have consistently participated in this event and have brought home medals and recognition for their city. He proudly stated that Zamboanga City has emerged as the overall champion in the national championships for the past three consecutive years.
