In a historic achievement, Alex Eala became the first Filipino to reach a Women's Tennis Association (WTA) singles final but fell short of capturing the Lexus Eastbourne Open in Great Britain. She lost to Australian Maya Joint in a thrilling championship round, 4-6, 6-1, 6(10)-7.
Impressive Victory in Madrid
Despite the setback, Eala quickly bounced back at the Madrid Open in Spain. She advanced to the second round after an impressive victory over veteran Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round on Wednesday evening, April 22, 2026 (Philippine time).
Rapid Rise in Rankings
Eala, who recently climbed to world No. 44, needed only one hour and 31 minutes to secure her spot in the second round for the third consecutive year. Her performance showcased her growing prowess on the international stage.
Eala expressed immense joy and admitted she did not expect to defeat Pavlyuchenkova, a former Grand Slam finalist and gold medalist in mixed doubles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so early in the tournament.
"She (Pavlyuchenkova) has been on tour for many years. So I'm really happy with this win. She's a great player, and I'm really happy to be in the next round," Eala said, as quoted by ABS-CBN News.
Eala's remarkable journey continues to inspire Filipino tennis fans and athletes alike, as she consistently proves her mettle against top-tier competition.
