The National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs took a crucial step towards defending their crown after outlasting the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses, 84-79, in a thrilling Game 1 of the UAAP Season 88 women's basketball finals. The match was held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, December 6, 2025.
Fourth-Quarter Composure Seals the Win
In a dramatic reversal of their elimination round fortunes, the Lady Bulldogs showcased remarkable poise in the final period. NU snapped UST's impressive 13-game winning streak by executing their game plan under pressure. The victory was especially sweet for NU, which had suffered two decisive losses to UST earlier in the season, 62-76 and 85-105.
"We feel relieved because during the eliminations, we got swept by UST. We’re happy, finally we’re able to get a win against them and what a timing that it's in the finals," expressed an elated NU head coach, DA Olan, after the game.
Balanced Attack and Stellar Performances
The Lady Bulldogs' triumph was a collective effort, powered by four players scoring in double digits. Angel Surada led the charge with a stellar all-around performance of 19 points, seven rebounds, five steals, three assists, and a block. She was ably supported by Marga Villanueva's 17 points, while Kristine Cayabyab and Marylene Solis contributed 11 points each.
For the Growling Tigresses, Season 85 MVP Eka Soriano fought valiantly with 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Kent Pastrana recorded a near triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. UST held its last lead at 70-67 with just over six minutes remaining, but could not withstand NU's closing surge.
Bullpups Dominate in U16, Men's Team Falls Short
In other UAAP action, the National University Nazareth School (NUNS) Bullpups moved within a win of the boys' U16 championship after a commanding 79-49 victory over FEU-Diliman. Sixteen-year-old forward David Sabareza was unstoppable, exploding for 31 points, including 26 in the first half alone.
"I just told my team to respect the opponent even though we beat them twice," said NUNS head coach Leo Pujante, emphasizing focus despite their dominant run.
Meanwhile, NU's bid for a finals appearance in the men's division ended after a 73-78 loss to De La Salle University. Jacob Cortez led the Green Archers with 29 points, setting up a third consecutive championship showdown with the University of the Philippines.
On the Cusp of a Dynasty
The stage is now set for a potential coronation. The NU Lady Bulldogs will go for their ninth women's basketball championship in the last ten seasons when they face UST again in Game 2. The decisive match is scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. A win would cement another chapter in one of the most dominant dynasties in Philippine collegiate sports history.
