BIR confident 'BGC Boys' will be convicted for P1.68B tax evasion

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) expressed confidence that the so-called 'BGC Boys' will be found guilty after the Department of Justice (DOJ) recommended the filing of 44 criminal cases related to an alleged total of P1.68 billion in tax liabilities.

Who are the 'BGC Boys'?

The three former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)–Bulacan engineers—Henry Alcantara, Brice Hernandez, and Jaypee Mendoza—face 44 counts of tax evasion for an alleged aggregate tax deficiency of P1.68 billion. According to the BIR, investigators found significant discrepancies between their declared income and their assets and expenditures. The agency also noted that some of them failed to file income tax returns in certain years.

Breakdown of cases and liabilities

The recommended complaints include 18 cases against Alcantara with an alleged tax liability of over P913 million, 10 cases against Hernandez with over P593 million, and 16 cases against Mendoza with over P179 million. Meanwhile, Hernandez and Mendoza are currently detained in connection with a separate case involving an alleged P92.8 million 'ghost' flood control project in Bulacan. Alcantara was removed as a respondent in that case after testifying and being placed under the Witness Protection Program.
