In a targeted operation on Wednesday night, February 11, 2026, authorities from the Cordova Municipal Police Station seized illegal cigarettes valued at P130,200 in Purok Langub, Barangay San Miguel, Cordova City. The raid was initiated following credible intelligence regarding the unauthorized sale of contraband tobacco products in the area.
Details of the Confiscation
Upon verification that the cigarettes were unlicensed, improperly labeled, and had evaded tax payments, police swiftly confiscated the illicit goods. The haul included 48 reams and 11 packets of Fort Cigarettes, along with 16 reams of King Pen Cigarettes. These items were sourced from a retail store operated by an individual known as alias Francis, a resident of Barangay San Miguel.
Supply Chain and Motivations
According to Francis, the cigarettes were supplied by a distributor based in Lapu-Lapu City and delivered via motorcycle. The suspect admitted to selling these products due to their significantly lower prices compared to branded cigarettes available in the market, citing economic pressure as a driving factor.
Ongoing Investigation and Official Statements
Currently, the evidence is under the custody of the Cordova Police for documentation and further investigation to identify other individuals involved in this smuggling operation. Police Colonel Abubakar Mangelen Jr., chief of the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO), expressed a firm commitment to combating illegal trade that undermines government tax collection and legitimate businesses.
"We will continue to intensify our campaign against the proliferation of smuggled cigarettes in Cebu Province. These illegal activities deprive the government of rightful revenues and harm legitimate businesses. We will relentlessly pursue those involved and ensure that appropriate charges are filed," stated Mangelen.
Community Vigilance Encouraged
Mangelen also urged residents of Cebu to remain vigilant and promptly report any similar illegal activities observed in their localities to the police. This call to action aims to foster community cooperation in curbing the spread of contraband goods and protecting public interests.
