1,378 Public Schools Damaged by Sarangani Earthquake

The Department of Education (DepEd) reported that 1,378 public schools across six regions sustained damage following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Maasim, Sarangani on June 8. According to the agency, 8,740 classrooms were affected, including 5,378 with minor damage, 1,774 with severe damage, and 1,588 that were completely destroyed. Additionally, 193 water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities were damaged.

Class Suspensions and Operations

Classes remain suspended in 3,500 schools, while 5,590 schools have resumed normal operations after safety inspections. The DepEd estimates that approximately P303 million will be needed for clean-up and repair of damaged schools. So far, P21.9 million has been distributed for immediate clearing and repair operations.

Joint Inspections and Support

The DepEd and the Department of Public Works and Highways are conducting joint infrastructure inspections in General Santos City and Sarangani. Psychosocial support is also being provided to affected areas.
