The truth slowly emerges, but questions still linger about the sudden and painful death of two student-athletes from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU): Rene Clert Baterbonia and Nigerian import Adili Divine.
Incident Details
The two drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on Monday, June 8, 2026. Despite the uproar and negative comments on social media, including fake news that heated the situation, the truth will eventually surface.
The anxiety of the parents of the two victims intensified when they did not receive accurate information immediately.
Investigation Results
After several days, the police released their findings, stating there was no foul play in the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili. They labeled the incident as an accident, which contradicts the speculations and accusations seen on social media.
While this development somewhat relieved some aspects, it did not ease the deep sorrow of each family whose dreams for their children's bright future were suddenly extinguished.
Call for Justice
However, the declaration of no foul play is not the end of the matter. Justice and identifying who is responsible remain crucial.
For the resolution of the controversy, it is better to allow the investigation to deepen and not rush to judgment. Many people demand transparency and clear answers about what exactly happened during the team-building activity. These questions are reasonable because two lives were lost.
But while waiting for the right answers, the most important thing is to remember the two young athletes who had dreams for the future.
A rebound, three-point shot, or championship can be replaced next season, but the lives of Rene and Divine can never be brought back.
In short, in sports, many losses can be recovered in the next games. But there are losses that we can never recover.
Beyond medals, trophies, and victories, life is still the most precious gift from above.
Rest in Peace, Rene and Adili.
