Talisay City Implements Phased School Reopening After Devastating Typhoon

Selected educational institutions in Talisay City will welcome students back to physical classrooms starting Thursday, November 13, 2025, marking a cautious return to normalcy following the destructive impact of Typhoon Tino. The resumption, however, applies to only 18 schools that have been deemed ready to continue academic activities, while numerous other institutions remain closed due to severe flooding damage.

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Talisay City conducted thorough assessments before making the determination about which schools could safely operate. Mayor Gullas announced the decision on November 12, emphasizing that the selective reopening follows careful consultation with DepEd Talisay City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Arden Monisit.

Safety Concerns Dictate Selective School Reopening

"After careful consultation with DepEd Talisay City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Arden Monisit and in consideration of the present conditions of affected communities, it has been agreed that only eighteen (18) schools shall resume face-to-face classes," Mayor Gullas stated during the November 12 announcement.

The primary consideration behind this measured approach is ensuring student and teacher safety. Many schools throughout Talisay City continue to grapple with the aftermath of severe flooding that rendered their facilities unsuitable for academic activities. The city was among the hardest-hit areas when Typhoon Tino struck the country, experiencing catastrophic flooding that claimed seven lives in the community.

According to Mayor Gullas, the selective resumption aims to balance educational continuity with safety precautions. The schools that remain closed will continue suspension of classes until DepEd officials determine they meet safety standards for students and teachers.

The city government continues to work with disaster response teams to address the ongoing challenges posed by Typhoon Tino's aftermath, prioritizing the restoration of essential services including education while maintaining focus on community safety and recovery efforts.
