Mindanao Earthquake: A Community in Crisis
A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on Monday morning, June 8, 2026, leaving widespread destruction and displacing thousands of families. The quake occurred just as schools were reopening for classes, but fortunately, students had not yet entered their classrooms as they were still outside for flag retreat ceremonies.
Despite this stroke of luck, the trauma and damage inflicted on the entire community are immense. Witnesses reported the ground cracking and structures collapsing, causing panic and loss. The hardest-hit areas include General Santos City, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Davao Occidental.
Immediate Needs and How to Help
Victims urgently require basic necessities such as clean drinking water, food (rice and canned goods), diapers, personal hygiene items like soap, clothing, pillows, blankets, and tents for temporary shelter during the cold nights.
Dennis Pastor, head of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Cebu Province, recommends prioritizing monetary donations at this time. Cash can be quickly transferred and used by victims to purchase their most urgent needs. He suggests coordinating with the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in affected areas to receive proper guidance on sending donations and to avoid congestion of relief goods in locations still dangerous for vehicle travel due to aftershocks.
Cebu's Solidarity and Past Reciprocity
Cebu has never been late when it comes to helping others. The Cebu Provincial Government has initially approved up to PHP 10 million in financial aid for General Santos City, exemplifying a spirit of brotherhood. Notably, General Santos City had previously sent PHP 8 million in financial assistance to Cebu after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the northern part of the province in late 2025. This gesture proves that kindness returns to those who sow it.
Private Sector Response
Beyond government efforts, private groups are also stepping up. The University of San Carlos Chemical Engineering Society (USCChES) quickly mobilized through its Facebook page to collect aid. Since logistics are still being organized, they are initially accepting only monetary donations via GCash to ensure faster delivery of assistance.
Every peso donated can make a significant difference in the lives of victims who have lost their homes and belongings. The spirit of bayanihan remains strong as the nation rallies to support Mindanao in this time of need.
