The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Mindanao has climbed to 45, according to the latest reports from local authorities. The Philippine National Police (PNP) has assured the public of its continued presence and assistance in the quake-hit areas, as relief and rescue operations remain ongoing.
PNP Assurance and Ongoing Operations
In a statement released on Tuesday, PNP spokesperson Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo confirmed that police personnel are deployed to ensure safety and provide aid to affected communities. "We will maintain our presence and extend all necessary assistance to those impacted by the earthquake," she said.
Death Toll Update
The number of fatalities has risen to 45, with many more injured and displaced. Search and rescue teams continue to sift through debris in hopes of finding survivors. The earthquake, which struck with a magnitude of 6.8, caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings.
Urgent Call for Cash Donations
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has urged the public to provide cash donations rather than in-kind goods, as aftershocks continue to hamper logistics and distribution efforts. "Cash donations allow us to purchase exactly what is needed and respond more flexibly to the evolving situation," said PDRRMO official Arvie N. Veloso.
Other Incidents
In a separate incident, a woman died after a motorcycle-truck collision on a bridge in Mandaue City. The accident occurred just hours after the earthquake, adding to the day's tragic events.
Authorities remind the public to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols as aftershocks persist. Donations can be made through official channels to support the ongoing relief efforts.
