At least four people have died after two trains collided in Bekasi, a city near the capital Jakarta, on Monday evening. The accident occurred at Bekasi railway station when a commuter line train and a long-distance train crashed into each other.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
Indonesia's railway operator confirmed four fatalities, while 38 others were taken to nearby hospitals. Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad warned that the number of victims could rise as rescue operations continue. Reports indicate that six to seven people remain trapped inside the train cars, prompting rescue teams to cut through metal parts to free them.
Investigation and Response
Jakarta Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. At least 20 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and rescuers from national disaster and rescue agencies are assisting in evacuating passengers. Authorities are expected to release further details in the coming hours.
