Free Meals and Rides Support Jeepney Drivers as Fuel Prices Surge
In response to the escalating fuel crisis driven by conflicts in the Middle East, civic organizations and local governments have launched initiatives to assist jeepney drivers in the Philippines. The Para Commuters’ Network, a civic group, distributed free chicken adobo rice meals to drivers in Manila on Monday morning, providing much-needed relief as oil prices continue to climb.
Community Efforts in Manila
Convenor Nanoy Rafael emphasized that commuters are doing their part to help, even if it means offering just one free meal per day. Drivers expressed deep gratitude for the support, hoping for more assistance in the future. Simultaneously, the Manila city government has implemented a free ride program in specific areas, such as the corners of Pedro Gil and Agoncillo, after hiring jeepneys for this purpose.
This initiative guarantees drivers a daily income of P1,000, a significant increase compared to their previous earnings of nearly P200 after deducting fuel expenses. According to drivers, this program is a substantial help in mitigating the financial strain caused by the ongoing oil price hikes.
Expanding Support in Iloilo City
In Iloilo City, the Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center (JASAC) has opened a community pantry dedicated to jeepney drivers. Here, drivers can access free fish, vegetables, and canned goods. The program has already aided 379 drivers, with plans to expand its reach to include fishermen and senior citizens in the coming weeks.
Ongoing Concerns and Warnings
Despite these positive efforts, many drivers remain anxious about the potential for further fuel price increases. Some groups have warned that if costs continue to rise, more operators may be forced to halt their services, exacerbating transportation challenges across the country. The collective actions highlight the urgent need for sustainable solutions to support public transport workers during this economic hardship.
