A grieving mother in Cebu City has firmly declared that she will not accept any settlement and is determined to file a case against the driver of a modern jeepney that struck and killed her 14-year-old daughter.
Mother's Emotional Plea for Justice
Cathyrine Regis, the mother of Zhyrine Regis Labra, expressed her anguish and resolve. "We will not settle. We will definitely file a case. How dare they," she said emotionally, referring to the driver of the modern jeepney that ran over her daughter.
The incident occurred on April 30 at dawn along Archbishop Reyes Avenue in Cebu City. According to the victim's family, the driver, identified as Junel Cordenesa Oman, 28, a resident of Sitio Mahayahay, Barangay Apas, Cebu City, attempted to flee after the accident, allegedly urged by his conductor to escape.
Family's Determination
The mother stated that they are committed to pursuing legal action and will shoulder all expenses. In an interview on Saturday, May 2, she revealed that since the incident, the operator of the modern jeepney has not contacted or spoken to them. They vowed to do everything to hold those responsible accountable and achieve justice for their daughter's death.
Details of the Incident
The victim, Zhyrine, was a skateboarding enthusiast for two years. On the day of the accident, she had agreed with friends to play basketball. While walking home along the roadside, she was suddenly hit by a speeding modern jeepney. Investigation reports indicate that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
When the driver attempted to flee, the victim's friends chased the jeepney, but the conductor reportedly drove them away and closed the door to prevent them from entering. Fortunately, a taxi driver helped block the jeepney, leading to the driver's arrest.
