Two PUJs Collide in Cebu City, Injuring Passengers

Two traditional public utility jeepneys (PUJ) that both violated traffic rules collided at the junction box of D. Jakosalem Street corner Gullas Street in Cebu City at 9:26 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026, resulting in injuries to their passengers.

According to the investigation of the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office, the vehicles involved were PUJ (GVR 526) with route 04I (Plaza Housing-Carbon) driven by Eliseo Pacaña Baculi, 45, from Sityo Cambitas, Barangay Babag 2; and PUJ 62B (Pit-os-Carbon) with plate number GWA 545 driven by Florencio Aser Gabonada, 56, from Sityo Camansilis, Pung-ol Sibugay, both mountainous areas of Cebu City.

The 04I jeepney had four passengers, while the 62B had 14 passengers, all of whom were taken to the hospital.

Based on CCTV footage from the Cebu City Transportation Office Eagle Eye, the 04I PUJ, carrying four passengers, was heading towards the University of the Visayas campus on Colon Street, while the 62B was traversing V. Gullas Street (formerly Manalili Street).

Investigators found that both drivers were at fault: the 62B forced its way across despite a red light, while the 04I proceeded immediately even on a yellow signal, indicating it jumped the gun before the go signal.

Due to the speed of the 62B, the 04I was overturned upon impact, causing injuries to its passengers.
