This event marked the second lighting ceremony since the bridge's reopening, drawing a large crowd of residents, local officials, and members of the Davao Filipino-Chinese community. The 1.34-kilometer-long bridge, a key part of the Davao City Coastal Road network, was built with funding from a China Aid grant under the Official Development Assistance program.
Festive Atmosphere and Cultural Performances
The ceremony commenced shortly after 6 p.m., with families gathering along the bridge to witness the spectacular lighting display. Cultural performances and music created a lively and joyous atmosphere by the riverside, enhancing the celebratory mood as the city welcomed the Lunar New Year. The event symbolized hope, prosperity, and new beginnings, highlighting Davao City's diverse culture and strong sense of community.
Mayor Duterte Emphasizes Unity and Friendship with China
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte led the lighting ceremony, joined by representatives from the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Davao City. In his speech, Duterte underscored the long-standing relationship between the city and China, describing China as a friend of the Philippines and acknowledging its significant contributions to the country's economy. He emphasized unity despite political differences at the national level, stating, "What is important is unity and helping one another," and noted that solidarity remains Davao City's strength.
Duterte also reflected on the bridge's history, mentioning that it was presented as a gift to former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte during his birthday when he was still in office, reflecting positive diplomatic ties. He addressed recent political tensions following the elections but expressed confidence that Dabawenyos would stay united and continue moving forward despite external challenges.
