Cebu Embraces National Arts Month with Vibrant Cultural Celebrations
The entire month of February 2026 is set to be a period of artistic expression and cultural pride in Cebu, as both the province and city join the nation in observing National Arts Month. This annual celebration, established through Proclamation No. 683 by the late President Cory Aquino in 1991, honors the rich tapestry of Filipino arts and creativity.
Theme and Opening Events
This year's theme, "Ani sa Alampat: Kamatuoran, Kadasig ug Paghiusa" (Harvest of Arts: Truth, Inspiration, and Unity), sets the tone for a diverse array of activities. The festivities kick off with the Cebuano Alampat Exhibit, running from February 2 to 7 at the Capitol Dome and Lobby. This will be followed by "Art's Talk Ani sa Alampat: Stories of Practice and Purpose" on February 7 at the Capitol Social Hall, offering insights into artistic journeys.
Competitions and Digital Arts
From February 9 to 13, the Capitol Lobby will host the "Hulagway sa Kamatuoran Digital Art and Illustration Contest", showcasing modern artistic talents. Concurrently, an online "Sugilanon sa Sugbo Digital Storytelling (Reel) Challenge" invites participants to share stories through digital media, emphasizing creativity in the digital age.
Cultural Performances and Fashion
Later in the month, the "Sayaw sa Pagpahayag Fusion Dance: Cultural and Contemporary Dance Competition" will take place on February 21 at the Capitol Grounds, blending traditional and modern dance forms. On February 28, the "Bisti sa Paghiusa Sustainable Fashion and Wearable Art Competition" will highlight eco-friendly fashion designs, promoting sustainability through art.
Details for these provincial events can be obtained from the Cebu Provincial Youth and Development Council, which is spearheading the initiatives.
Cebu City's Artistic Contributions
In Cebu City, the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) leads the arts celebration. The city's program begins with an exhibition titled "Pit Senyor in Every Step" at the Cebu City Museum on February 2. Another exhibition, "Paghinumdom, Pakigbisog: Poster Exhibit", will be held at the same venue on February 9.
In line with the city's 89th Charter Day Anniversary on February 24, a Charter Day Exhibit will be displayed at the Cebu City Legislative Hall. Additionally, CHAC will promote "Adlaw sa Dilang Sugboanon" (Cebuano Language Day) at Cebu Technological University on February 19.
Educational and Commemorative Activities
A forum on "Climate Change: Its Impact on Gender and Culture" is scheduled for February 20 at the Cebu City Museum, linking environmental issues with cultural discourse. On Charter Day itself, February 24, a morning program and flower offering will be held at Plaza Sugbo, followed by a formal dinner in the evening to honor the 2026 Outstanding Individuals and Institutions.
With such a packed schedule of events, residents and visitors are encouraged to explore and participate in these cultural offerings, celebrating the arts as a unifying force in Cebu.
