President Marcos Champions Binondo Revitalization to Elevate Cultural Heritage and Economic Growth

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. spearheaded a significant walkthrough on Friday, February 13, 2026, marking the launch of the second phase of the Binondo Revitalization Project in Manila. This initiative underscores the government's dedicated efforts to preserve, enhance, and celebrate the nation's rich cultural heritage, with a focus on transforming the world's oldest Chinatown into a vibrant hub for tourism and local economic activity.

Illuminating Historic Landmarks for Cultural Pride

The ceremonial lighting event illuminated key cultural and historic sites across Binondo, including La Madre Filipina, MacArthur Bridge, Sta. Cruz Church, the Four Gates of Chinatown, and major thoroughfares such as Quintin Paredes, Ongpin, and Sabino Padilla. Additionally, a projection mapping display at Binondo Church captivated attendees, showcasing innovative ways to bring history to life.

President Marcos emphasized that these enhancements aim to make Binondo more accessible and appreciated, particularly by younger generations. "This way, Binondo becomes more accessible and more appreciated by more people, especially the younger generation. These efforts will reinforce the district's historical role as a center of trade, of faith, and community, and support culture-based tourism and local economic activity," he stated.

Fostering Community and Economic Development

The project is designed to benefit not only Chinese-Filipinos who reside in Binondo but also every Manileño and visitor who traverses its bustling streets. "This project is for the benefit of Chinese-Filipinos who call Binondo home, and for every Manileño who visits and travels through its busy streets every day. Moreover, it is for every Filipino and for anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of our culture and our history," Marcos added.

With over four centuries of Filipino-Chinese heritage, Binondo's revitalization allows this legacy to be visibly celebrated and shared across generations. Marcos pledged further developments, including transforming Ongpin Street into a cultural and economic hub and enhancing historical landmarks along Escolta Street with thematic lighting presentations.

Integrating with Broader Urban Renewal Efforts

The Binondo initiatives complement the progress of the Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli Program, which focuses on revitalizing the Pasig River. Marcos highlighted plans to develop the Pasig River Ferry system to connect Manila Bay and Laguna Lake, alongside reclaiming public spaces like Plaza Mexico and expanding pedestrian corridors toward Arroceros Forest Park.

"From reclaiming public spaces such as Plaza Mexico and expanding pedestrian corridors towards Arroceros Forest Park, to modernizing river transport and clearing our waterways, we are restoring life to the river and the communities beside it," he explained. This integration enables seamless connectivity, allowing people to walk, jog, or bike from Intramuros, past the Manila Central Post Office, across Jones Bridge, and into Binondo.

Building on Past Success and Future Optimism

Phase II follows the successful ceremonial lighting of Jones Bridge in the project's first phase. Marcos expressed optimism about the favorable outcomes of this undertaking, noting that Binondo's uniqueness lies in its long history of commerce, faith, and cultural exchange between Filipinos and the Chinese community. "Beyond its age, what makes this place special is its long story of commerce, faith, and culture between Filipinos and the Chinese community. This initiative is all about honoring shared histories and giving the district the much-needed attention and respect that it deserves," he remarked.

Founded in 1594, Binondo stands as a historic hub for trade and cultural exchange, positioning it as a prime destination for culture, tourism, and economic activity in the heart of Manila. This revitalization project aims to cement its status while fostering sustainable urban renewal and community pride.
