Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Olaso delivered a poignant message on the enduring significance of Dr. Jose Rizal, urging citizens to view the national hero's martyrdom as a catalyst for continued national progress.
Rizal Day Ceremony at City Hall Park
The local government held a commemoration program on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, marking the 129th anniversary of Rizal's execution. The event took place at the Rizal Park in front of Zamboanga City Hall and gathered representatives from various multi-sectoral groups across the city.
In his address, Mayor Olaso emphasized that Rizal's death on that date in 1896 should not be seen as an end, but rather as a powerful beginning. He framed it as a perpetual call for every Filipino to overcome challenges like fear, ignorance, and indifference.
A Message Rooted in Timeless Values
"Rizal taught us that true patriotism begins with love for truth, respect for human dignity, and the courage to stand for what is right -- even at great personal cost," the Mayor stated during the ceremony. He connected Rizal's principles directly to contemporary civic duty.
Olaso extended a special appeal to the younger generation, underscoring their critical role in shaping the nation's future. He pointed to Rizal's own profound belief in education and the transformative power of an enlightened youth.
"I'm calling on all our youth, our children, to love our country, who knows? You'll be the future leaders not only of Zamboanga City, but probably of the entire country," he expressed, highlighting their potential.
Strength in Everyday Courage
The Mayor expressed his hope that Rizal's memory would serve as a constant reminder for all Filipinos, and Zamboangueños in particular. He articulated that a nation's strength is built not solely on the deeds of historical heroes, but on the daily actions of its people.
This includes the collective courage to uphold justice, choose what is right, and prioritize love for country over self-interest. The year's commemoration was anchored on the theme "Rizal Sa Pagbangon ng mga Mamamayan, Aral at Diwa Mo ang Tunay na Gabay" (Rizal: As Our People Rise, Your Teachings and Wisdom Guide Our Way).
Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda was executed by Spanish colonial authorities for his writings that inspired the Philippine revolution. His martyrdom at Bagumbayan, now known as Rizal Park in Manila, continues to be a cornerstone of Philippine history and identity.
