The National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue City has taken a significant step forward in its ambitious journey toward achieving basilica status, unveiling a preliminary schematic design for a transformative project estimated to cost over P100 million. During a stakeholders' meeting held on March 19, church leaders and planners showcased the initial plans, outlining the necessary changes to meet the rigorous requirements for designation as a basilica.
Community Involvement and Ownership
This presentation served not only to reveal the architectural vision but also to actively engage the community in the monumental undertaking. Fr. Ian Fel Balankig, a member of the shrine's Team of Pastors, emphasized that the meeting's goal was to foster a sense of ownership among stakeholders. He stated, "When people feel they are part of the project, construction becomes smoother. That's why we displayed all plans so that, even with different contractors, they follow a unified plan and we stay on schedule."
He encouraged families and individuals to support the initiative, whether through funding specific aspects of the plan or making donations of any amount. The church aims to submit its application to Rome by 2029, underscoring the urgency of collective effort.
Architectural Vision and Enhancements
Architect Roy John de Guzman, leading the design team, explained that the current plan remains flexible and may evolve through further consultations. The design seeks to preserve the interior of the existing shrine while extending its architecture outward, blending Neoclassical elements with American-era influences. Key improvements include refining the facade and optimizing the flow of pedestrians and vehicles.
Planned Features and Economic Impact
The project encompasses a range of enhancements designed to elevate the shrine's functionality and appeal. These include expanding parking areas to accommodate buses, creating a beautiful space for pilgrims, and constructing a large museum dedicated to St. Joseph, which is touted to become the largest of its kind in the country. Additional amenities such as a coffee shop, gift shop, and security area are planned to enhance the devotional experience and generate funds for the church.
Church officials also highlighted the critical importance of support from local government, particularly in boosting tourism, as achieving basilica status is expected to provide a substantial economic boost to the area. By uniting the community behind this vision, the National Shrine of St. Joseph moves closer to realizing its goal of becoming a basilica, marking a historic milestone for Mandaue City and its faithful.
