President Marcos Advocates for Enhanced ASEAN Supply Chains and Intra-Regional Trade
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has underscored the critical necessity for member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to strengthen their supply chains and amplify trade within the region itself. According to the President, one of the pivotal lessons derived from the COVID-19 pandemic is the urgent requirement to render supply chains more robust, particularly among fellow ASEAN member nations.
Current Trade Dynamics and Strategic Agreements
President Marcos revealed that approximately only 23 percent of ASEAN's total trade originates from intra-trade or commerce within the region, while a substantial 77 percent is sourced from outside ASEAN. Consequently, member countries have reportedly reached an agreement to prioritize the enhancement of trade relations within the ASEAN region as a foundational step toward economic stability.
Key Initiatives Under Discussion
The President outlined several measures currently under deliberation to achieve these objectives. These include the development of a common ASEAN power grid and the standardization of importation processes. These initiatives are designed to accelerate transactions and deepen mutual understanding of each nation's business laws and systems.
The overarching goal is to restore ASEAN as a formidable force in the global economy, leveraging internal strengths to mitigate external vulnerabilities. By fostering a more integrated and resilient economic framework, ASEAN aims to bolster its position on the world stage, ensuring sustainable growth and enhanced cooperation among its members.
