President Marcos Urges Stronger ASEAN Cooperation to Revive Regional Economic Leadership
Marcos Calls for Enhanced ASEAN Unity to Boost Economic Resilience

President Marcos Advocates for Enhanced ASEAN Collaboration to Address Economic and Security Challenges

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a compelling call for heightened cooperation to reinvigorate the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a primary force in the global economy. This appeal comes as the Philippines assumes leadership of the regional bloc this year, marking a pivotal moment for collective action.

ASEAN Centrality as a Foundation for Economic Recovery

During his address at the ASEAN Editors and Economic Opinion Leaders Forum held at the Fairmont Hotel in Makati, President Marcos underscored that ASEAN centrality must remain the cornerstone of the region's strategy for economic resurgence. This aligns with the Philippines' chairmanship theme, "Navigating Our Future, Together." He articulated a shared aspiration among all member states to return ASEAN to its former status as a global economic driver, a position it held notably in 2019.

"I think we share the aspiration, all member states share the aspiration that ASEAN should return to its old role of being an economic – a global economic driver. That happened in 2019, that's where we were and we need to return to that," President Marcos stated during the Special Session Fireside Chat titled "Tapping the Philippines' Dynamic Growth Story."

Unity in Diversity: A Practical Approach to Economic Cooperation

President Marcos elaborated that the concept of "together" in an economic context involves recognizing, understanding, and committing to act as a unified region while respecting the distinct national differences of the eleven member countries. He emphasized that unity does not imply uniformity, as ASEAN nations vary significantly in economic size, population, and development levels.

Despite these disparities, the President highlighted that the common goal of restoring ASEAN's leadership in the global economy serves as a binding force. "That joint and shared aspiration of returning to that role in the global community is something that we hold in our hearts together," he added, noting that achieving this objective will require diverse approaches tailored to each country's circumstances, yet executed in harmony to fulfill both national and regional ambitions.

Policy Reforms: Strengthening Internal Supply Chains

When questioned about specific policy reforms the Philippines will champion during its chairmanship, President Marcos focused on the critical need to bolster supply chains within ASEAN. He referenced lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed vulnerabilities in regional logistics and trade networks.

"Very soon after COVID, the discussion around ASEAN was that we have to learn from the lessons of COVID. One of the great lessons that we had to do was to make more robust our supply chains," the President explained. This has led to a collective understanding among member states to prioritize internal strengthening, thereby enhancing the resilience and competitiveness of ASEAN.

Boosting Intra-ASEAN Trade for Greater Resilience

President Marcos pointed out a significant statistic: currently, only about 23 percent of the region's total trade occurs within ASEAN, while 77 percent is conducted externally. He argued that expanding intra-regional trade is essential to fortify ASEAN's stability and competitive edge, paving the way for the bloc to re-establish itself as a major player in the global economy. By increasing internal trade, ASEAN can reduce dependency on external markets and foster a more self-sufficient economic environment.

This strategic focus on supply chain robustness and enhanced cooperation reflects a proactive approach to navigating future challenges, ensuring that ASEAN not only recovers but thrives in an increasingly interconnected world.
